Exquisite Antique Boxes

I am fascinated by antique boxes, all shapes and sixes. There is something about antique boxes that shout history, culture, love and art all at the same time. The intricate nature of the patterns carved on these antique boxes are simply amazing, the time and talent required to create them simply boggles the mind.

True to form, an antique is said to be any object (not necessarily artistic in nature) that is more than a hundred years old. There are all kinds of antiques that people collect, but among the most fascinating are antique boxes. Of course, I don’t expect you to share my view as all antiques are personal favorites. But as far as I am concerned, antique boxes represent the spirit of the antique that we all find so fascinating.

For me antique boxes spell treasure. I grew up reading stories of treasure chests and pirates like Robinson Crusoe, Treasure Island, the Swiss family Robinsons and the like.

And in all of them, there were these antique boxes that were always filled with the promise of treasure even if there was no real treasure. But antique boxes have ever since held a tremendous fascination for me.

Imagine my surprise then when I stopped by my regular bookshop to disciver that he had a number of antique boxes displayed prominently at the counter. Of course he had gone one step further to pack these antique boxes with books to reinforce the treasure that lay in books and reading, by my entire being was consumed by the sight, smell and look of those antique boxes.

I immediately rushed in to ask him where he had procured them. He was more than an acquaintance and knew all about my fascination with antique boxes. Even then, he feigned ignorance for a while before breaking down helplessly in laughter. As he lay there with tears of mirth streaming down his eyes, I could not but help wonder anxiously about the antique boxes and how h had managed to get his hands on them. When he had calmed down sufficiently, he told me the truth.

Seems there were a number of people like me in the world who found ancient antique boxes (with or without any treasure) fascinating. And one proactive Chinese company had decided to capitalize on this fascination by making near actual replicas of antique boxes.

While I was initially disappointed, a closer examination led me to believe that if the boxes I saw were replicas of antique boxes, they were damn good replicas. And as they were priced very affordably unlike the real thing, I decided then and there to get myself a couple of them. Now I too am a proud owner of a couple of antique boxes.
